Driver Improvement Course (DIC) in Ottawa

Accumulated too many tickets or demerit points? Our DIC course helps you correct bad habits, refresh your knowledge of traffic laws, and get back on track.

What Is the Driver Improvement Course?

The Driver Improvement Course (DIC) is designed for drivers who have accumulated a high number of traffic tickets, demerit points, or violations. This course is often required by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) or recommended by the court as part of a resolution for driving-related offences.

At Golden Key Driving School, we approach this course with professionalism and without judgment. Our goal is to help you identify the driving behaviours that led to your violations and give you the tools and techniques to become a safer, more responsible driver.

Who Should Take the DIC?

  • Drivers who have received multiple traffic tickets and need to demonstrate improvement to the MTO or their insurance company.
  • Drivers referred by a court as part of a resolution for driving offences.
  • Drivers at risk of licence suspension due to accumulated demerit points.
  • Any driver who wants to proactively address bad driving habits before they lead to more serious consequences.

What You'll Learn

  • A thorough review of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act and the rules most commonly violated.
  • Understanding the demerit point system and how it affects your licence and insurance.
  • Techniques for managing speed, following distance, and right-of-way in high-traffic situations.
  • How to recognize and correct aggressive driving behaviours.
  • The impact of distracted driving (phone use, eating, etc.) and strategies for staying focused.

DIC vs DDC — Which Do I Need?

If you've been involved in a collision and need to improve your defensive driving skills, you likely need our Defensive Driving Course (DDC). If your issue is primarily tickets and demerit points rather than a collision, the DIC is the right choice.
